The Early Days
The seawall being installed in the early days
Loggerhead Cay got its start when a model unit opened on the property on November 25, 1972 with pre-construction prices starting at $39,000. A $1,000 deposit was required to hold the unit until the ground breaking took place. Forty-five units in Phase 1 (Buildings 1 & 2) had to be sold before ground could be broken. By March 1973, the quota was met and construction began.
Erosion sea walls were installed around the foundation from the beach front back to the elevators which made each building a concrete fortress able to withstand the worst hurricanes.
The Loggerhead Cay Condominium Association, Inc. was registered as a Florida corporation on May 31, 1973. There were supply chain shortages of steel so the construction was delayed multiple times and the move-in date was pushed to the fall of 1974. The pool, tennis courts and shuffle board courts began in mid-1975.
The original address was 666 Beach Road and neither Beach Road or East Gulf Drive were paved at the time.
